Education Fund Committee

September 2002

 

By order of City of Quincy, order number 2002-204, the Quincy City Council passed an ordinance to establish the City of Quincy Educational Fund Committee. The Committee shall oversee the distribution of donated funds to provide supplemental educational funding for local educational needs.

  • Spearheaded by School Committee Member JoAnn Bragg the ordinance was developed to allow charitable donations to supplement the strapped Quincy Public School budget.

  • Ward Three City Councilor Kevin Coughlin worked with JoAnn Bragg in research and wording of the new ordinance.

  • Committee made up of representatives to include a Quincy Public School teacher, parent representatives, community representative, member of the School Committee, member of the City Council, Superintendent of QPS.

  • The distribution of this fund will be made by the Education Fund Committee at open meetings.

  • This separate fund will be maintained by the City auditor.

 

November 2003

The Committee released funds for the purchase of HP Network printers to each of the schools and a selection of  library books to each and every school. The total funds collected and distributed to the Quincy Public Schools amounted to $18,000.

 

February 2008

Mayor Koch appointed a new Committee who is responsible to determine how to spend the funds. The committee consists of:

  • Superintendent, Dr. Richard DeCristofaro

  • School Committee Woman, JoAnn Bragg

  • Ward Three City Councilor, Kevin Coughlin

  • Citywide Parents’ Council member, Barbara Isola

  • Quincy Public School Teacher, Nancy Barron

  • Concerned parents and residents of the city interested in school affairs, Grace Buscher and Michelle Lydon.

October  2008

The Quincy Educational Fund Committee met on October 1 to begin discussions on how to spend the donations collected.

November 2008

The committee decided to conduct a needs’ assessment of the school department by utilizing School Improvement Plans and ideas from each school. The Superintendent will be sending out an email requesting this information then the committee will analyze the results. In the past funds benefited every public school by purchasing computer network printers and library books.  

How to Donate

Anyone wishing to donate can send a check made payable to either the City of Quincy or Quincy Education Fund at Quincy City Hall, Attn: Collector’s Office, 1305 Hancock St. Quincy, MA 02169.

If check is made payable to City of Quincy you must attach a note that it is a donation for the Quincy Education Fund. This can be sent with or without the middle donation section of a property tax bill.
